The Vila Ricardo

The Villa Ricardo is a charming villa located in a beautiful slope above the entrance of Porto da Cruz.

It is a large property with a high level comfortable accommodation in a quiet location, has several terraces enjoying uninterrupted panoramic sea view, and a subtropical garden of exotic fruit trees and small banana trees.
The property owner valued a stylish and friendly environment. The house has 3 double bedrooms, (with the possibility of an extra bed and cradle for baby), all with private bathroom (shower) and TVset. In the winter all the rooms are heated by a device that recovers the heat released by the fireplace, and automatically distributes it to the rooms. The sitting-room is equipped with TVset, DVD, Stereo System, Computer, Internet WI-FI, Safety Deposit Box, WC, and the kitchen is fully equipped. Outside you can enjoy the heated pool and the sunbathing area with views to the ocean and the Village.

In September, wine is made in Villa Ricardo, by a centennial traditional process. There is also a historical wine cellar.

Twice a week the house is cleaned, linen is changed and the rooms are provided with fresh towels.

Porto da Cruz, Madeira, Portugal
Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (Cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (Porto). The attractions of this small parish are hidden and youll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when its working you might even see steam coming out!

Not to be missed is also the place known as Penha dÁguia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there youll be sure it was definitely worth

Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as vinho seco americano (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho). In Porto da Cruz there are another two wonderful religious celebrations, with great beauty. The first occurs on days 15 and 16 of August, and the second, at the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday). They are celebrations that visitors should not miss!!!

The Porto da Cruz village, has a Public natural swimming pool (sea water), a black sand beach, mini markets, restaurants equipped with several different kitchens, bars, transport services, health services, able to provide to the visitor, the satisfaction of emerging daily needs.

Madeiras capital, Funchal.
Madeiras capital, Funchal, is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchals historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century.

What to see. The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the islands discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.

Nearby. Opened to the public in 1960, the Botanical Gardens on the edge of town display plants from all over the world, including desert cacti, rainforest orchids and South African proteas. The famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. Madeiran tobogganing was invented as a form of passenger transport around 1850. Much frequented by Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s, the pretty fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the worlds second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Refuge) near the centre of the island.

“I already was hosted in this house with some friends last summer, and I can assure you that was the best vacation of my life. The island is beautiful! The house is fabulous! The Village is cozy! The house is well equipped and the pool is spectacular ... With a view to the sea! I advise this house for all who want to vacation with friends and family!”

“The villa was even better than expected, being very well equiped and in a fantastic position overlooking the scenic village of Porto da Cruz. Unfortunately we did not meet the owner, but found the owners representative extremely friendly, helpful and courteous as was the general attitude of the islands population we met. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property to others. ”

“Fiquei hospedada com a minha família nesta maravilhosa casa, e adoramos. A Vila do Porto da Cruz é muito acolhedora, e tem tudo o que nós necessitamos, nomeadamente restaurantes, farmácia, centro de saúde, mini-mercados... Aconselho vivamente. A casa está muito bem equipada, e a piscina faz as délícias dos miudos! Experimentam!!”

“This is a spectacular villa. The owner is very nice and gentle. The house is well equipped and is very comfortable! The microclimate of the village of Porto da Cruz transforms the holidays unforgettable in any season, my children plunged in the pool in the autumn! My family will return in the next year! ”

“We have hired many properties abroad and are not that easily satisfied but I can find nothing but praise for our Madeira holiday. The villa was of very high standard for the price charged and the care and help we received was first class. The property was clean and well equipped and any minor problems we had were speedily and effectively dealt with. We are likely to return to Madeira in 3/4 years and will use your services again without hesitation.”

“Very friendly reception by Mr Ramos and family. We were supplied with grapes, grape juice and some local specialities. The villa was in excellent condition and well cleaned twice a week with a change of linen. The lady doing this service was very friendly and extremely helpful. A real treasure!! We were disappointed that the internet was not up and running. However to be fair, at the time we booked there was no mention of an internet connection this appeared on the website at a later date. One of the best villa holidays we have had. We hope to return.”

“The reception we received on our arrival was exceptional, and the holiday only improved day by day. The villa is in a fantastic location with uninterupted veiws over the village of Porta de Cruz and the Atlantic. The villa is very well equipped, and the house keeper very helpful, and cleans the villa twice a week with clean towels and linen each time. The people of Madeira are very friendly and the island truely is a paradise, we would recommend the villa and the island to all our friends. The village is a short walk and the restaurants are excellent and welcoming, I can only say try them all. We will certainly be using the villa again,”

“Excellent property. Pool and view were fantastic. The small town of Porto da Cruz was very nice and laid back, facilitating a more relaxing vacation. It was a short and easy drive into Funchal or to many levadas. The only difficulty was in finding the property the first time. The directions provided were fine for getting to Porto da Cruz but not that helpful in finding the property in town. However a cell phone number was also provided so once in town you could call and be talked the rest of the way in.”

“A lovely property in an excellent position on the edge of Porto da Cruz. The views from the terrace are beautiful and we couldnt get enough of them. The welcome we received from Rubinia and Mr Ramos was very nice and Rubinia looked after us throughout the two weeks with nothing being too much trouble. She even provided us with fresh produce from her father-in-laws garden and we had lots of fruit available from the villa garden. We didnt bother with a car but used the local bus services which were interesting and quite exciting to say the least. You can get on and off the bus right outside the villa and the fares are very reasonable..There is only a very small general store in the village but an excellent bread shop and quite a few bars and restaurants. We were mainly self catering and went to Machico to find a supermarket for our bulk shopping. Catering for six in the villas small kitchen was quite a challenge but we managed ok! EXCELLENT ALL ROUND!!”

“What a lovely week we had at the Villa Ricardo. It was just as described on the website. Betty was there to meet us and give us a guided tour of the house and surrounds and answer our many questions. The house was very comfortable and very clean, and in a great location. Ricardo was a great host, and invited us to help make wine under the house, which was a once in a lifetime experience and so much fun. We hope that all that hard stomping we did helped produce a great vintage!! Also we were lucky enough to be there over the annual wine festival held in the village over 2 days. What an amazing party and celebration. We were thrilled to have had such a lovely holiday at this great villa. ”

“The whole experience, from choosing the villa booking on-line, to all of the administrative communications and finally arriving at our destination was outstanding. A delightful welcome from the owners was very well received their warm and friendly personalities made us feel at home immediately. The villa is perched beautifully providing an outstanding view of both the village, the sea and the picturesque mountainous terain. A short walk into the village below provides a highly attractive bimble into the heart of a traditional community. The private pool provides a fabulous area to commune, where the views and scenes continue to capture the essence of the island. We are most thankful for such an enjoyable experience.”

“Iam very happy to recommend staying at Villa Ricardo, our 2 weeks there were very enjoyable. The housekeeper Mrs Betty is dedicated to her work and makes you feel very welcome as well as ensuring that the Villa is kept extremely clean. The pool is wonderful and is probably the main reason that we didnt get to see as much of the island as we would have liked.! The location of the villa is also extremely pleasing with a lovely view over the village of Porto da Cruz and onto the sea and even though the villa is situated on the road into Porto da Cruz, noise is never an issue. When we return to Madeira again we shall be looking to stay at Villa Ricardo. ”

“As a small group of 20-something friends, we very much enjoyed our stay at Villa Ricardo. It is everything as described (in detail) on the website and more. On arriving, we were met by Betty and Mr Ramos and shown around the villa, offered a tasting of the in-house Madeira wine and told to eat as many bananas as we liked supplied from the banana trees in the grounds of the villa! The villa and pool facilities were excellent and well maintained, and the villa was thoroughly cleaned twice during the week. One possible improvement would be to have some ceiling fans or portable air conditioning units in the bedrooms as they do get a bit warm at night, but otherwise 10/10.”

“We had a brilliant stay in this beautiful house. Particular plus points were: views of the enormous surf from most of the windows of the house and the real wood fire. Mrs Betty looks after the cleanliness and is very helpful with recommendations - she even took us to the centre of town when we arrived at lunchtime to show us around. Each of the three bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom (showers/no baths). The garden is a real treat as well - bananas and mangoes, and it backs onto a vineyard. Thank-you for such a wonderful stay. ”

“The villa suited our needs perfectly. Being a family with grown up children scattered around the UK, it provided a perfect place to enjoy each others company in a delightful setting and very comfortable villa. Mrs Betty was extremely welcoming and as well as showing us around, showed us to a restaurant where we could still eat at 10pm. Everything was well thought out. There is only a very small oven and a two ring hob but we were able to be creative in our cooking! The use of the internet was invaluable, if a little expensive. The extra charge for 4th, 5th and 6th persons did mean that this was not a particularly cheap option but having said that, it proved to be a wonderful holiday and we would have no hesitation in returning to this property or recommending it to others. The owner, Ricardo, met us before we left and invited us to sample his home made wine in the impressive winery under the villa, giving us a lovely send off. ”

“We very much enjoyed our stay at this lovely villa. The description and the pictures of the villa are very accurate and we particularly enjoyed the terrace and the pool and spent some lovely evenings playing cards and enjoying the breezes. The local village has a few restaurants and bars and a few shops for the basic supplies. However we preferred a drive to Machico for the supermarket and a lovely restaurant in the hills overlooking the town. We were made very welcome by the owner Ricardo and Rubina who was a mine of information and very helpful in every way. Madeira is a very beautiful island and to explore it properly you do need the use of a car. We spent a interesting if hot afternoon treading the grapes grown on the property to make Madeira wine which helped to make the holiday more memorable. ”

“We stayed for 2 wonderful weeks at end of August. The villa is as good as the photos but the hospitality and service is second to none. Ricardo and Rubina were wonderful hosts and we enjoyed their company and that of the grape pickers with whom we shared an occasional aperitif. Port da Cruz is a quiet village with nearby Machico offering a good range of shops/restaurants. If you want to sample the real Maderia and its friendly people, then this is as good as it gets. Recommend plan your trip around local festivals as that just adds to the charm. Villa RIcardo is a gem well worth the visit.”

“Villa Ricardo is indeed the best accommodation that we have experienced on any European holiday of this kind. A superbly maintained property that is very clean and extremely comfortable throughout. The owners provided really good customer service and we were made very welcome from the moment of our arrival. The description of the villas position was indeed accurate. Porto da Cruz boasts superb views and character whilst being close to connecting routes to other places on Madeira Island. The restaurants in the village seem pleasant although there are greater choices in the nearby town of Machico which also boasts a very useful supermarket! Infact, Machico is a good focus for night time activity that Porto da Cruz does not offer to the same extent. We would gladly return to Villa Ricardo and would recommend this accommodation to anybody looking to discover the beauty of Madeira Island!!”

“A really nice property, located in a lovely village on the north side of Madeira. We were really pleased with a number of things. Porto da Cruz is a great little village with sufficient amenities (restaurants, bars, etc), but is not smothered by tourists as is the case in Funchal. Because of the excellent tunnel & expressway system there is rapid access to all other parts of the island. The villa itself is everything one could ask for - and you get great introductions to the area from Rubina (who is like the concierge, speaks perfect English, and goes out of her way to help when you arrive and during your stay) and Ricardo who introduces you to the local fire water. As well as touring the island, try the fish stew at the local village restaurant, Pipas. Highly recommended.”
