The civil parish of the reserve
The civil parish of Caniço stands out for being a tourism destination by excellence, at Caniço de Baixo. The number of beds has increased so much that today this parish constitutes the second largest hotel offering on the Madeira group of islands, after Funchal.

To add to this growth, the parish has had a strong increase in terms of housing construction, and it has nearly become a dormitory for those who work in the capital.
Caniço owes its name to a plant, made of long thin canes called “Caniços”, which used to abundantly grow there at the time the island was discovered.
The civil parish of Caniço is located close to Funchal.
Washed by the sea, Caniço is one of the most beautiful parishes on Madeira Island . Known for its mild temperatures, Caniço is sough by many people both during the summer and the winter.
Caniço is valued as a place of entertainment, as well as of relaxation.
The partial Natural Reserve of Garajau, Portugals only exclusive sea reserve, created in 1986, is integrated in Caniço. Due to the biologic diversity and extraordinary clearness of the water, it offers unique conditions for diving, enabling you to contact with mantas and large harmless fish. Together with Funchal and Machico, Caniço constituted one of the first settlements on the Island . From this settlement, people soon started cultivating the land.

Amongst the first settlers, one would like to point out Álvaro de Ornelas, the Genovese, Lucas Salvago, João Gavião, Gaspar de Rêgo, Vasco Martins, Afonso de Viena, some of whom were of noble origin.

The parish has about 18 thousand inhabitants.
From Caniços main economic activities, one would like to point out onion plantation. In former times, Caniço was the parish where more onion was cultivated on Madeira Island.
Besides the above mentioned hotel industry, there are also countless quality restaurants. Trade is also an important activity in Caniço, with its large shopping centre – Caniço Shopping – as well as other medium sized supermarkets and all sorts of shops.
In terms of climate, during the winter the average temperature in Caniço is of 17 ºC (63 ºF) and in the summer, 23 ºC (73 º F).

In terms of humidity, in the highest part of Caniço the levels are somewhat high.

How to Get There
You can get to the parish of Caniço by taking the Estrada Regional (regional road), both from Funchal or from Santa Cruz.
From Funchal, take the freeway in the direction of Aeroporto (Funchal-Aeroporto), and then turn off at the Caniço junction.

Funchal
Madeiras capital, Funchal, is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchals historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century.

What to see. The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the islands discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.

Nearby. Opened to the public in 1960, the Botanical Gardens on the edge of town display plants from all over the world, including desert cacti, rainforest orchids and South African proteas. The famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. Madeiran tobogganing was invented as a form of passenger transport around 1850. Much frequented by Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s, the pretty fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the worlds second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Refuge) near the centre of the island.

“The villa IS set in a beautiful location and the views from the garden and balcony are superb. However, there was NO washing machine or telephones in the bedrooms, even though the villa information states that there are. Saucepans & other cooking utensils are not plentiful or suitable if the villa is at full occupancy. Dishwasher powder or dish cloths are not provided but washing up liquid & bath soap are - for a villa in this range I would expect them to be. Hire chair & travel cot were provided for our daughter but towels were not (there were only 5 adults when we stayed and one bedroom was shut off - not what I would expect when hiring a VILLA). Pool is well positioned BUT is not heated and in November at 50F was NOT warm enough to swim in. Also NO net available to clean the debris from the bottom of the pool. Despite these few negative points the villa is located in a good location and is very well furnished. It is peaceful and the views are superb, if you want peace and quiet with only the ocean as a view then this would suit you. Location to the main roads to both the airport & Funchal are within a few minutes drive, although NO shops or restaurants located within easy walking distance. It is worth renting as long as you are prepared for the few short comings that Ive mentioned.”

“This is a splendid house, beautifully situated and quite luxurious in all respects. It is a tad more 'urban' than the photographs suggest but once inside the only views are over splendid cliffs and sea withinin well kept and flowery gardens and patio. All equipment works well including CD / tape players in every room and satelite TV in every room. Kitchen equipment is good including an 'American' fridge with ice and water dispenser. Excelent washers & dryers in the basement. During our visit a new sea and swimming access was being built with cable car that will give perfect sea swimming only 100 yards away. The pool is small but clean and great fun, not heated but fine for swimming in September. Good daily supervision and welcome by the owner who collects rubbish and was helpful about local amenities. Our only criticism might be that every cupboard was bare on arrival. Some salt, pepper, milk, bread etc plus a cold bottle of white wine would have been nice.”

“Our third Christmas in Madeira at a villa and our best villa to date - fantastic location and views, one of the best locations on the island for the weather in December, (we even managed dips in the pool), very private as two empty plots as neighbours, good access to supermarkets and Funchal, spacious and beautifully kept interior and facilities, Snr Pestano was attentive, charming and helpful. It was the first time we had stayed for New Year fireworks and words fail us on descrbing them - absolutely amazing. Really only two comments which are intended to be helpful! New pillows needed and a welcome basket of wine, bread, cold meat, olive oil etc would be much appreciated by new visitors to Madeira who arrive late and may not know their way around supermarkets. ”

“What a fantastic location! We watched dolphins from the terrace and the changing colours of the sea provided a beautiful view as we sunbathed.... The villa is spacious and comfortably furnished. Pillows rather questionable, other bedding pristine. We were happy with the bathroom facilities (perhaps an attachment to fix the shower head to the wall in the first bedroom). The pool was too cold even in the hot sun and a heater would be good! Facilities excellent with a couple of suggestions for the charming owner Mr Jose Pestana - please leave some oil. salt, pepper - just basics - in the cupboards. Such a nuisance to have absolutely nothing and we just didn't use a whole bottle of olive oil in one week! Same with basic kitchen washing cloths and liquids. Even dishwasher tablets. The property was not cheap and therefore these could be included surely... Location convenient for Garajau and large supermarket. Car absolutely essential. Fantastic fantastic location. ”

“We enjoyed a wonderful week in Villa Belo Horizonte. The setting is superb, the views spectacular and the standard of accommodation very high. For August the temperatures were very pleasant (around 26C), and sunbathing on the terrace is certainly not the ordeal it can be in other holiday destinations. The pool is small but perfect for a quick dip, and the barbecue was a welcome surprise for us. A few tips: try the half day introduction to scuba at nearby Canico de Baixal (Manta Diving)- good value for money and the sealife is amazing. There are several good places to eat around there too, as well as in canico itself and of course Funchal. A drive into the mountains is a must, as well as the cable car to the Tropical Gardens in Monte. If you have kids, take them to the Aquapark in Santa Cruz. Special thanks to the very helpful Sr. Pestana who helped us settle in and made sure we had all the information we needed. If you are planning to stay in Madeira, this property is highly recommended.”

“You are definitely paying for the view, location and outside spaces here, all of which are fantastic. The interior, however, although spacious, has been somewhat neglected and certainly not what you would expect for the price. First of all we felt the house had not been properly cleaned. The windows in particular were very dirty. Not everything worked properly either. Starting in the kitchen, there was a large coffee machine which was broken. The kettle lid was broken, when we tried to move an oven shelf, the brackets came away from the sides of the oven. Despite the owner telling us that the hot tap had to be run for a few minutes before it would come through, we only once managed to get any hot water from it, meaning we either had to boil a kettle or get some from the outside sink! Much of the glassware and crockery was chipped and dangerous to drink from. The dishwasher and microwave, although pretty ancient, worked fine. Some instruction booklets would have been useful. We spoiled a fair amount of food as anything we put in the bottom half of the fridge completely froze. In the living room, there was a very nice television with a couple of British channels the CD player however, wouldn’t play more than two tracks before packing in. The three piece suite, which was once leather, was very grotty and worn. The bed settee unfortunately, tried to turn itself into a bed every time anyone sat on it making it incredibly uncomfortable. There were magazines in the rack going as far back as 2007 and most of the tourist information was out of date, however, there were plenty of novels to read if necessary. The dining table had a grubby plastic cover on it which actually put us off using it so we ate any meals in the kitchen as the weather wasn’t quite good enough to sit outside. Upstairs, the bedrooms were fine although not enough pillows, however, a request to the owner for extra ones was dealt with straight away. In the shared bathroom the bracket which held the shower to the wall was broken so had to be hand held. The owner told us this had been done by the people before us and would not be fixed until after we had returned home. It was obvious this was not the case as there was some very old string on the bracket where someone had tried previously to attach it. Towards the end of the holiday the shower head completely snapped off leaving us with just a hose to use. In the junior suite bathroom, again, no bracket to hold the shower to the wall and we were unable to use the Jacuzzi bath as the plug was the wrong size so the water wouldn’t stay in. The floor was very dirty too. The owner turned up most days and came into the house to collect the rubbish which we found a little intrusive. All in all, we had a good holiday, the surrounding area was great for shopping, restaurants and access to the rest of the island, but this house desperately needs attention ”
